Important information

The World

Overview

  • [ ROLL20/DISCORD ]

Strictly VC over Discord and I use Roll20. No need to be familiar with any of these. I will help newbies learn any of these and D&D 5e through play itself.

  • [ RACES ]

Official limited races (not included supplement races), but some homebrew may be allowed (just check with me!). The races not available are: halfling, and gnome. Generally animal-based races not allowed.

  • [ CLASSES ]

Official classes, though some homebrew may be allowed! Just ask.

  • [ FOOD/MAINTENANCE ]

I will generally take it you will eat/drink at available opportunities as well as replenishing stock. I will notify multiple times prior saying stock is starting to get low until you run out.

  • [ RESURRECTION ]

Characters can perish, though I am not fond of going down this route unless a player wants to start a new character; even then, an alternative narrative way is more likely to be taken instead (last time I did this the PC ended up in jail for all his thievery pursuits). Resurrection exists in this world but is abhorrently outlawed and requires incredible power, whether that be divine or abyssal.

  • [ WEIGHT ]

I don’t particularly find it fun managing weight, so feel free not to worry about it. I will monitor it so you carry items within reason (e.g. not being able to carry two 2-handed swords, a mace, a shield etc together at once).

  • [ LEVELS ]

Level up occurs by milestones. No need to keep track of exp.

  • [ RULES ]

I am on an everlasting journey to being a better DM. I am also testing out some in-progress features etc. Rules may be changed/added or removed on the spot!

  • Most important thing is HAVING FUN! If a class etc. doesn’t match up with what you want, we can work something out!

What to expect

  • ➼ I run a narrative-driven game that intertwines each player's backstories over several arcs personal to your character.

  • ➼ I allow players to choose what to do when their character fails their death saving throws. You can roll a new character, or roleplay and carry on with that same character. I will narrate it appropriately.

  • ➼ Expect a heavy RP game. Battles/encounters are mostly tied to the story.

  • ➼ I am a storyteller. This is an ongoing campaign up to level 20, so it requires commitment on everyone's ends!

Rules

  • ➼ Everybody is here to have fun. (ᵔᴥᵔ)

  • ➼ The DM is not against the players. If anything, they are rooting for the PCs!

  • ➼ Try it! No need to ask for permission to do things. You will get the same response every time if you do which is "You can try".

  • ➼ Rules aren't written in stone; they are guides. If the DM wants to change a rule on the fly, that is acceptable and valid. Likewise, it is impossible to remember every rule. What isn't okay is if the DM keeps changing the same rule(s) so there is no consistency, or if the DM makes no effort in trying to use the rules.

  • ➼ Avoid being a rules lawyer. Some gentle reminders are okay, but have respect.

  • ➼ Anything the DM/Players can do the other group can do too.

  • ➼ Don't expect to be a badass straightaway. Growth is an important theme in D&D! If you want to be able to do whatever the fuck you want with no consequences, go play a power fantasy game. Or Skyrim.

  • ➼ Please avoid metagaming and being that guy. Even if you play a lone ranger, D&D is a cooperative game with other people at the table. Remind yourself of that.

  • ➼ If somebody is not having fun or annoyed at something, bring it up. Don't linger and don't make passive-aggressive comments. It suuucks. See the image below:

Setting

Summary

Strangers share unfamiliar damp cells, unsure as to the events leading up to their imprisonment. The days leading up to their imprisonment are a blur to the players and they seek to know why they ended up jail

Magic

Summary

Magic is as well-versed and used as any physical weapons. Likewise, it is seen as useful when in the right hands. The minorities that cannot control their magic and have caused a criminal offence because of this are sent to MCIs, a sort of reforming, magical prison. (see below).

Magus Conefinement Institutes

Mages are often taken into strict schools to control their magic (Magus Confinement Institutes). Those that learn through studying need not worry of this, though there are some cases where studious intent creates uncontrollable destruction.

They are required by law throughout Halendal. Anyone that has committed a criminal offence via uncontrolled magic is sent here. Their stay varies greatly depending on the offence.

Reception

⬥ Warlocks are typically treated with caution. Older families may worship the otherworldly patrons. They are stigmatised and face predujice more than other casters.

⬥ Necromancy is outlawed throughout Halendal. Those who practice it do so in secret.

⬥ Wizards typically have the best reputation. Through dedication and study their potential is realised.

⬥ Druids are also favoured as they draw from nature itself.

⬥ Clerics are highly valued as they preach the pure teachings of gods. Clerics who stray off this path are unforgiven and despised by the public - it is an unthinkable path.

⬥ Sorcerers' wild magic is seen as an annoyance, and surprisingly, there is no correlation between wild magic users and the users being more likely to be confined.

Races

All races live for around an average of a century, though some may go for longer. Elves and drow (dark elves) typically age up to 150.

List of races:

Humans

Humans are the most widespread and adaptable. They populate most cities.

Average height: 5'8

Dragonborn

Dragonborn are few and inbetween, and only tieflings are more scarce than them. The general land feels neutral to their presence. There's been some evidence to sugget they originated from lizards.

Average height: 6'5

Orcs

Orcs are typically disliked due to their brutish appearance, though some have found places within society wherein they found peace. Male tusks tend to be slightly longer by an inch or two. Half-orcs are more likely to be accepted.

Orcs look human in nature, but are inherently stronger than the other races. As such, they are very muscular, and often have varying horns and teeth on show. Their skin colour range is the range of humans plus some colder colours (pale blues, greens).

Average height: 6'2

Tieflings

Tiefling face predujice for being horned, much like the orcs. Their demon-esque appearances come from their colouring and horns. Their horns are much like goats and rams, though some can differ from this.

Tiefling colours range from human colours to reds, blues, and greys. The colours are faint, though there are exceptions.

Average height: 5'6

Drow

An elf race that used to inhabit the under-ground.They are not welcomed by the general public and many struggle to advance in jobs (if any). They are dark skinned with blue hues to very dark blacks. Their hairs are typically silver, ginger or white.

Average height: 5'9

Dwarf

A race that often takes home in mountains. This hardy race is muscular and stocky. They tend to be secretive, and other races have attempted to pierce into their supposed knowledge.

Females can grow beards much like males and are encouraged to do so.

Average height: 5'0

Elves

Elves' ears have varying lengths and shapes - they are unique to each of them. The have intergrated well with the general population.

Average height: 5'9

Aarakocra

Native to the plane of air. Being beast-kin, they are generally treated in the same manner as dragonborn.

Travel from the elemental plane of air is controlled closely by humans in Illebor.

Average height: 5
